Sunday, October 29, 2006 tuition!!!>going to be jobless soon after next week. if i win the subaru, i will be $80k richer, which means i dun need to work for maybe a few years... haha... nevertheless, i will be scouting around for jobs. just went for an interview at fish & co (bugis) this afternoon for kitchen assistant/ waiter position. hourly rate was $5, which is a far cry from what i am earning now... like $25 avg per hour. sigh... if only everyone wants tuition... haha... still deciding whether to accept the fish & co job (althogh the shop manager says she's going to employ me already) cos the pay is really peanuts. or should i wait for a sales assistant job at a sports shop... which pays approx $7 per hour??? gotta decide... one is 'supposedly fun' to work in a kitchen (but lower pay) while the other has higher pay but is less exciting.... hmm...
the pri 3 kid ... hmm... is improving... but needs more work... her maths exam is next monday. tomorrow will be my last lesson with her... wondering if her school has taught her sufficient stuff for her level. seems that there is some discrepancy in the school syllabus and the assessment book questions (as she has claimed). hmm. she was sulking just now when i was teaching her how to divde and multiply by 2 digit numbers... and exceeded the allocated time by 10 min. kids nowadays.. .. ..

Monday, October 23, 2006 a night at zouk>so after pondering on whether to go clubbing for the past few days, i finally went to zouk with my friends, and i don't think i regretted that decision. well, zouk is quite a fun place to be in, great place to drink and distress, but nevertheless, an expensive place to be in and is highly recommended that you only go there once in a few months... 'cos the drinks are expensive.
was'nt quite good at dancing... definitely not as 'high' as my friends 'cos i only drank like 3 glasses and 2 shots. quite alot of wild people down there at the dance floor, music yesterday was so-so... got quite bored after awhile. maybe will return during x'mas period... hopefully with a bigger group of friends = more fun =)

Saturday, October 21, 2006 finally...>finally, today is the official last day which i will have to report back to camp. yeah! after 2 days of 'exercise' in seletar camp, doing some wargaming stuff, making do with little sleep, watching movies during the 'exercise' when our directing staff are not around... its finally over. even though i have slept abit during the 'exercise', now i still feel quite tired. gotta get my training back on track soon... the ironman and stanchart marathon is coming soon...
& finally, i managed to get thru the 987fm hotline for the subaru wrx challenge... $80k... must win. haha. but still need to go thru another round of lucky draw before i can place my hand on the car. hope i can win! if not i will be going to get a motorbike license, which is so much more affordable and within my budget.
for now, i can slack in peace till my uni term starts at end july 2007. need to do some work to earn extra bucks. maybe will consider going back to tjc to do some relief teaching, but meanwhile, will continue to do tuition. so if you guys got any lobangs (upper primary onwards, maths and science related subjects), feel free to contact me! you will be rewarded too!

Thursday, October 19, 2006 tired...>ok... so the 4 hour exam is finally done... hoped i had passed it. and was guven a rude shock during the end - of - course Exercise briefing, when i was given the appointment of Bn S4. lots of stuff to do... need to give presentation. sigh. need to prepare so much stuff. luckily i have a good team of friends helping me. working till now. reason was just reached home at midnight, packed my stuff for tomorrow, read through the powerpoint slides, reformatted them so that they look more presentable, make sure that everthing is error free. this leaves me with one final rehearsal tomorrow for the presentation, and fine tuning of any slides should we discover any discepansies. for now, my eyelids are getting quite heavy... gotta sleep...
p.s. not even in my jc life when studying for 'a' levels did i sleep so late...

Wednesday, October 18, 2006 eureka!!!>okay... so after 7 lessons, me pri 3 student finally understood how to solve problem sums using modals... haha... yeah... it was tedious to get her to understand how to do the sums step - by - step. young people nowadays are so impatient. she likes to jumps steps, do one line solutions and in the end, dunno what she was actually doing. so i got her to highlight all the keywords and write down what the question wants her to find out, what information she requires to solve the question and those information that she has or needs to find... and eureka! she finally knew how to do a simple problem sum with minimal prompting.... an achievement for me =)
tomorrow got a 4 hour army exam coming up... from 0800 - 1200hrs. sigh. i don't think i will ever have such a long exam in my life again. and luckily it is semi open book. meaning they let us bring selected books into the exam hall. guess i have to bring some sweets to endure that 4 hours of torture. have not really studied for it yet, and don't have any intention to study much for it too... not aiming to be the best student... as long as i got a grasp of the concepts taught can le... haha... ord mood already...

Monday, October 16, 2006 wonderful... wonderful...>a long but fufilling day...
gave tuition in the morning, swam in the afternoon, watched a movie and hung out with friends till late... well... the departed is a hollywood version of the hong kong hit - infernal affairs, starring tony leung and andy lau, and in this case, leonardo di caprio and matt damon (replacing the 2 hong kong actors respectively). slight deviations in the plot, but some how i feel thatthe hollywood remake does not match up to the standards of the original movie. here, in the departed, the 'gang' was so much smaller (less than 10 men in size), no dramatic triad versus police scenes, and the movie just does not feel as 'dark' and 'mysterious' as the original. somehow i felt that the triad is lacking in some aura here, and that the 2 hollywood actors failed to understand their respective characters and portray their feelings. shall not leak the storyline here, but my other friends (some who has not watched infernal affairs before) said it was a 'not bad' movie... well its all up to you guys to judge. for me, i will give it a 2.5 out of 5 stars...
recommended my friends to this italian cafe called menotti, which has half priced pastries after 10pm. good deal, and we ate quite a fair bit of pastries down there... haha... good deal!!!

then we went on for more munching, as my friend recommended us this smoked duck stall at this 24 hour kopitiam foodcourt opposite SMU... the duck meat was succulent and the skin crispy... go try!!!

5 more days to go before i officially go on leave. =D now, its time for me to prepare for my course exam tmorrow... sigh... no mood to study le. can't imagine going to uni to study, reading through those thick stacks of lecture notes....

Sunday, October 15, 2006 just another day...>was looking forward to the bbq today with my other army friends... to celebrate our oncoming ORD in november (yeah!). unfortunately, this bbq was not really that fun... ys, there were a little laughter and jokes cracked here and there, sharing of happenings in their army camps and of course, commenting and ogling of young girls passing by our pit (hmm... this is normal for a gang of army boys... just imagine spending 44hrs each week with your own sex). other than that, there was nothing more. no after bbq activities. some came late. others left early. some chose not to come although they had promised to do so. ordered too much food. leftovers. threw away some. brought home others. i've got 4 packs of stingrays and 2 packs of jacket fish in my freezer now.
but on the bright side, the food was really above average. just have to remember that for bbq, don't order too much. order just below what the group can consume. its always better to have not enough food than have too much food for bbq, to avoid the inconvenience of bringing home the raw stuff...
hope tomorrow's sec sch gathering would be a better one... watching the departed at the cathay. hope its a good movie. fyi my friend told me that world trade centre was not really nice to watch... well, its subjective... but i think i will give that movie a miss...
getting late... long day ahead... ciao...

Saturday, October 14, 2006 at last...>finally... a boring week has come to an end...
looking forward to the bbq tomorrow...
don't know if i should give myself a break from all the 'training'. sometimes i wonder i train so much and exercise so much for what. my parents told my once that sports is free and that everyone gets to enjoy the benefits of sports without paying any cent... hmm... maybe thats why triathletes are special? we are willing to pay a damn huge some of money just to swim, bike and run back to back? sometimes i really wonder if the investment that i had planted into this sport is really worth it. anyway, i hope that my passion for this sport will never die...

Friday, October 13, 2006 one more day to weekend!!!>yes... after almost a whole week of boring lectures and discussions, finally, the weekend is coming! so is my tuition pay... haha... and i am looking forward to my ord bbq this weekend... and the food will be great... cos i'm the one who co-ordinated it... haha... thanks to timothy who recommended me this website for bbq caterer: www.bbqwholesale.com.sgwell, today was not a bad day either. although discussions were boring, there were occassional talking cock here and there... which really livens the atmosphere... thanks to this funny guy in my group called sze chang. then, went for a 'out-of-the-blue' 7+++km run at east coast park... good breeze... nice weather.... definitely good training... and the haze is back!!! sigh!!! hope my sore throat will be gone in time for the bbq this saturday. meanwhile, will continue to drink lots of water... friends out there... take care of your health too! training today: run 7+++km 40:37

Monday, October 09, 2006 imagine...>
okay, so i got my new phone today and is effectively $468 poorer. but so what, at least i have a much much better phone to use now. but for the next two weeks, this phone will have to stay at home... cos the darn army camp does not allow me to bring in camera phones.
and finally! the haze is almost all gone and my sinus problem has subsided. but training today was tough man! well, was supposed to go sentosa today but my dear friend last minute cancelled it, so i've decided to go for a run at 11am.... yes... haha... and i really suffered.... never in my life did i feel so dehydrated for just a 15km run and i even had to walk! err... so that explains my less than average timing.
nevertheless, still happy that our skys are almost clear of the haze and we will soon be able to breathe in fresh air.

Saturday, October 07, 2006 yawn...zzz...zzz...zzz...>sitting on the bus back today was terrible. with this relatively slim guy beside me, although he only occupied half the seat, his legs were so spread out that i could hardly put my legs in the space in between the seats. really uncomfortable. was wondering if it was really necessary for him to spread his legs so wide apart? was he ignorant that there was another passenger beside him? can't he be more considerate and adjust his sitting position to give me the space that i am entitled to? yet again, i saw another incident on a feedr service today, of an auntie putting her many plastic bags of shopping stuff on the seat, thus effectively occupying 2 seats. well... i think she could have just placed the items on the floor cos there were just far too much passengers boarding that bus and she should have been more considerate to put her stuff on the floor? anyway she only paid the bus fare for 1 person, which only entitles her to 1 seat what... Singaporeans' attitude never change... talk about being a first world country... i think we still have a long long long way to go...
wah... never felt so sleepy before. today after i had dinner and showered, immediately fell asleep. the only thing that lacked today is a cooling environment + rain to have a really good night's sleep. the weather these few days were crap, considering the situation around my tampines area. it's hot, dry... and smokey and i even got a sore throat! from my house, which is about 1km away from Temasek Polytechnic, the haze is so bad that i could only see the lights! just checked the psi reading from nea = 80!!!
anyway, haze aside, was considering buying a new handphone (either a nokia n73 or samsung ultra 12.9) my old 1G colour phone is starting to give me problems le... and its also time to upgrade my singtel plan 'cos i am currently still using the really old and classic, classic plan and it does not entitle me to any free incoming calls!

Friday, October 06, 2006 late nights...>Have been having late nights recently, not due to work (of course), but more of blogging... have been trying to figure out how to upload multiple pics (which i am glad i have done that), and also how to embed a music into the blog (which i am overjoyed to proclaim that i just did it this evening =D).
did a 45km ride today. not a bad ride. went all the way from Seletar Camp to Kranji Camp. may sound as if the distance is very long, but actuall its only 45km lah... (whats this compared to an 180km bike in iroman!!!). well, terrain was undulating (full of mini 'hills' along mandai road) and still managed an average of 29.6kmh and a maximum of 50.3kmh!!! of course, my thighs are very 'sour' now but nothing beats the feeling of being able to 'conquer' so many hills! many thanks to eric for the ride and of course, letting me gain mileage on your auto car (it was fun to drive an auto... haha...)

Wednesday, October 04, 2006 reflections>it has really been some time since i had last took a leisurely stroll in tampines central. usually for me it will be a hurried walk to the transitlink office to top - up my ez - link card or to ntuc to purchase electrolytes. this triathlon and ironman dream has really taken a toll on my life. however, i think the experience generated from such sports, and the character shaping that comes with the participation in such sports is definitely invaluable. then, i suddenly recalled on a question that my friend asked me this afternoon while we were slacking away... he mentioned to me:' so xin wei, when are you going to get a girlfriend?' err... ok... i was thinking why did he ask me this question all of a sudden... so i thought and replied that well, now is not the moment and maybe not in the year to come at least... there are just too many things that i have set to accomplish for now and probably my life is so packed and schedule so tight that i can hardly fit in the time and money to keep a girlfriend... haha... if i need to date a girl, i would probably need to find someone who goes to the swimming pool almost every alternate day, cycles at least twice a week and be able to wake up at unhumanly hours to run 15km. and to add in uni next year, studies and more studies, staying in the hall, getting involved in hall activities, going out with old school friends, hmm... looks like there would be hardly time for anything
anyway... yes finally gotta upload photos... guess its something wrong with my desktop, using my bro's laptop now...
well, thats all for the slacker today... meanwhile, gotta figure out the html code for looping music on the blog... ciao =)

Sunday, October 01, 2006 ironman-to-be bakes a cake...>ha... after an almost unproductive morning and afternoon, finally did something useful just now:
I registered for the Langkawi Ironman!!! Alright, you guys might not know what an Ironman event is, so I shall very briefly talk about it here in 3 lines: Swim: 3.8 km Cycle: 180 km Run: 42.2 km The cost of this event is crazy. I approximate that I will spend around $800 in all, just for the event prep and the actual day itself. Well, my mum and dad are already complaining about me joining such an expensive sport. But I will always remind myself that life is about doing what you like and what you think is worth the price. If I miss out next year's opportunity, who knows when I will be able to take part in such stuff... with uni and all that shit bogging me down... ok, so now I will look forward to training and prep for this event, and you guys out there could gimme some moral support... haha... it would be even better if you guys could go down to Langkawi physically to support me =P... sponsors? anyone? i will print your name on my helmet and shirt... =D this is the 3rd banana cake i have baked so far:
ok, does'nt look as good as those sold outside... but I have had included a layer of banana chunks in the middle of the cake. can't really be seen in the photo cos its all yellow anyway.. haha... by the way anyone wants to test-bite can call me at 91707958... *don't be shy!!!*
