Thursday, April 12, 2007 tuition>hmm... just realized it never felt so good to be your own boss again... haha. managing my own time, slotting in pupils to teach, granting myself a holiday whenever i don't feel like teaching and of course, the satisfaction gained when i see my students understanding certain concepts.
today, while i was sitting around waiting for time to pass and to go teach another student, i worked out how much i would have gotten so far from tuition and the breakdown are as follows:
students enriched per month: 7 this is made up of: - 1. 01 x JC2 student (Maths) 2. 01 x JC2 student (Maths) 3. 01 x JC1 student (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Economics) 4. 01 x SEC 4 student (Chemistry) 5. 01 x SEC 3 student (Chemistry) 6. 01 x SEC 3 student (English) 7. 01 x PRI 4 student (Maths)
sum earned per month: SGD 2070 this is made up of: - 1. $480 2. $180 3. $640 4. $150 5. $240 6. $200 7. $180
hours worked per week: 17.5 hours this is made up of: - 1. 02 x 2.0 hours 2. 01 x 1.5 hours 3. 02 x 2.0 hours 4. 01 x 1.5 hours 5. 01 x 2.0 hours 6. 01 x 1.5 hours 7. 02 x 1.5 hours
so if you do the maths, i am being paid approximately $29.50 per hour. hmm. seems good. but this is ignoring transport time, and the actual earnings varies due to cancellation in lessons and so on. but nevertheless, tuition is a lucrative business. haha.=)

Wednesday, April 11, 2007 cycling.>never felt so relaxed on my 10 year old steel mountain bike. haha. went for a cycling trip with biao, boon and rain today. the sun was so hot that almost all of us got burnt. nevertheless, it was fun. supposed to go visit the changi museum to look at the murals inside but we ended up getting there too late and it was closed (fyi it closes at 5pm, last entry at 4.30pm). so we took a picture outside the museum. haha. was really a long and tedious trip from ecp through coastal road, then up the hills of selarang and to the changi museum.
i miss riding on my road bike though. hope to be able to ride it next week. meanwhile, more running for me. =)

Sunday, April 08, 2007 stephanie sun - autograph session>whow! never knew the fans could be so hardcore. i reached the central at clarke quay promptly at 3pm but by then, the shopping centre was already filled with a huge crowd of her fans. and her fans generated so much heat and warmth that even the air conditioning system of the shopping centre could not neutralize their effect, making the shopping centre almost as warm as the humid weather outside. the autograph session was simple. 2 songs, a few games and interaction with the fans and the signing session began. the whole event lasted for approximately 2 hours. by about 5pm, the crowd was already thinning.
met up with wenjian, a veteran of such autograph session and went for dinner together. he suggested having it at this 'Fisherman Wharves', famous for their fish & chips. but to our dismal, upon reaching that place, it was not air conditioned. well, it was a huge turn off at that point in time as the weather was hot and humid owing to the heavy rain before. so we decided to head down to raffles city where we experimented with this restaurant at the basement, called 'Out of the Pan'. the restaurant specializes in crepes. they were good. but definitely not filling enough for two hungry monsters who just orded not long ago from ns. so we headed down to 'Hong Kong Cafe' just beside the bridge connecting Citylink to Suntec, at Marina Square. Been there a couple of times and the food there was superb, but a little expensive. Great for late night supper 'cos the place opens till the wee hours in the mornings and 24hrs on wkends. then headed off to the airport where we originally wanted to have deserts at swensensbut scrapped the idea due to the queue.
so much for a day out. sounded more like a food hunt =)

Wednesday, April 04, 2007 relief teaching - day 3>and when everything seemed to be alright, something is sure to occur. today is my last day of relief teaching at dhs. 3 teaching period and a double period interaction session with his class. went to his form class for physics lesson. whow. his class was terrible. it was filled with super active people. but maybe its just because i am a relief teacher and thats why they did not bother. nvm. as i was going through their physics assignment, one of the girls suddenly suffered hypertension. ok. i was at a lost what to do... but luckily there were st. john's students around. whew. all i did was just to stand around and look. what else could i do... when already 2 students are tending to her. luckily she managed to relax after a while and i told the 2 students to bring her to the sickbay and lessons resumed as normal.
really had a scare then... wonder what would the situation be like if there were no sjab pupils in class...

Tuesday, April 03, 2007 relief teaching - day 2>wow. today was ultra slack. only had 1 1 hour period. went to school late, cos taking into account that the relief teachers are only paid $65/ 5.5 hours, and that anything after is free labour, it does not make sense to go early. haha. went to school at 9am. then lazed around till 12pm when wenjian finally came and had lunch with me. then talked awhile, went to his staff room to look around and really felt bored. went for my only lesson at 1415 hrs. went through another physics assignment. finished 15mins early. since i had nothing else to do, i released the class early. ight as well make them happy since its their last period also. =). but i will only do this when i'm relief. if i'm a real teacher... then releasingthe class early will definitely be a no no.

Monday, April 02, 2007 relief teaching - day 1>wow. travelling to dhs is definitely crazy now that it had moved to the temporary campus at the ex-rjc site at mount sinai. woke up at 0530hrs (like back to army days) and took a 1.5 hr train ride to dhs. reached school about 0730hrs. went to the teacher's desk. his name is nigel. he left a note for me stating all the stuff that he has allocated for me to do during the 3 days of this week that he will not be present. not alot of stuff though. looked through them. hmm... not too tough too. manageable. i thought. flag raising was about to start. at 0755hrs, the same old marching music was played through the pa system. looks like nothing much has changed. haha. its back to the good old days. except that our ex-dm mr. kiw has retired. its still the same old fashion of lag raising ceremony. student from a uniformed group giving the command, while a teacher stands beside to supervise. then, the national anthem, followed by the national pledge. then, the school announcements are read by the prefect, also from the same booklet. lastly, the school song. really felt good going through all these. feels good to go back to school.=). wonder if i have a chance to go back to tjc to teach and experience the same stuff. haha.
had to teach 2 sec 4 classes today. went through a waves assignment. the 2 classes were really different. one was very active while the other seemed rather monotonous. explained to them some physics concepts which they don't understand. oh ya. one of the students from the more active class commented that i looked like a park ranger. really? haha. did'nt realise that. maybe its time i get some formal wear for relief teaching over the weekends. the bulk of the time was spent slacking in the staff room and surfing the net. chatted with a few teachers and one commented that we all relief teachers were really earning good money ($65/ 5.5hrs). well i don't do relief teaching everday what... so i just treat the money as winning 4D lor. haha.
